SENATOR BUHARI SUPPORTS DIRECT PRIMARY FOR POLITICAL PARTIES ..as Senate passes motion on electoral act
Distinguished Senator Buhari AbdulFatai today supported the adoption of direct primary election for political parties in the country.
While contributing on the floor of the Senate to a motion of re-commital of some clauses of the Electoral Act No 6, 2010 as amended sponsored by Senator Abdullahi Yahaya Abubakar, Senator Buhari cited the example of United States of America where Nigeria copy her democracy and stated that all candidates for elections in America emerge through direct primary.
“Direct Primary allows members of the political parties to participate in the process of choosing the parties’ candidates, thus, make them a stakeholder in the exercise” He stated
Senator Buhari further explained that every member that vote for any aspirant during direct primary is automatically his or her coordinator and that of the party.
“Mr President, Distinguished colleagues, let us say if the party in your state for example has ten thousand members and INEC registers thirty thousand eligible voters in that same state, let’s assume you win the primary election even with seven thousand out of ten thousand party members, all what your campaign needs to do is to win the rest twenty thousand eligible voters” He submitted.
In conclusion, Senator Buhari added that if you are a man of the people, direct primary is an easy way to win an election.
The motion was put to vote and Senators voted massively in favour of direct primary for political parties in choosing their candidates.
