The lawmaker representing Oyo North Senatorial District is the Upper Chamber and winner in the recently concluded elections into the 10th Assembly, Distinguished Senator Dr Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari, has asked the Nigerian Youths to acquire the needed literacy skills that will make them self sufficient and also enable them to contribute significantly to national development.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport made this call today Thursday 18th May, 2023 at the 2nd Annual Distinguished Lecture organized at the Eti Osa Lecture Theatre by the College Of Management and Social Sciences of Fountain University, Osogbo in Osun State, where he was the Guest Speaker.

The former Commissioner of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Matters in the late Senator Isiaq Abiola Ajimobi led administration in Oyo State was delighted to share the key highlights of his presentation with the key focus on the roles of youths in national development within the digital economy.

During the lecture, Senator Buhari explored the concept of the digital economy, where digital computing technologies play a central role in economic activities considering the fact that the Nigerian economy is currently undergoing significant changes, transitioning from a traditional economy to a technology-driven one.

He equally emphasized the necessity for our youths to acquire digital skills, which will enable them to effectively navigate and utilize digital devices, communication applications, and networks. These skills are essential for their active participation in the digital economy and for making meaningful contributions to national development.

The former House Of Representatives member shed light on the profound impacts of technology across various sectors. From the banking industry, where digital solutions have revolutionized financial transactions, to the education sector, which has embraced virtual learning platforms, technology has brought about enhanced efficiency and productivity.

Furthermore, the Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Information And Communications Technology (ICT) highlighted specific ways in which the Nigerian youths can contribute to national development within the digital economy.

This, according to the lawmaker, includes embracing the concept of ‘prosumerism,’ where they actively participate as producers and consumers, they can stimulate innovation and growth. Engaging in information and communication technology practices, cultivating an economic mindset, and participating in capital-enhancing activities were also emphasized as crucial avenues for youth to make a meaningful impact.

In conclusion, Senator Buhari posited that the Nigerian youth hold the key to our nation’s progress and development within the digital economy. By seizing the opportunities presented by technology and acquiring the necessary skills, they can drive positive and immeasurable changes and propel Nigeria forward.

As his continuous contributions to the technology and human capacity development of the youth across the country, Distinguished Senator Dr Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari donated a fully well – equipped ICT centre to the University use.
