OPP: Our Poisonous Politicians

When people say “politics is a dirty game” in Nigeria, they are understating the nature of Nigerian politicians.

Nigerian politics, at least across the south, is a cesspit inhabited by people neck-deep in unrepentant moral squalor.

Of course, I am not talking about all politicians in the south. I exclude Senator Buhari AbdulFatai Ph.D and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu Aketi about whom I have sufficient information to vouch for their respective character. You can exclude your own favorite politicians too.

I have spent the past several minutes ruminating on the dog-eat-dog, stab-in-the-back types of relationships between and amongst our politicians. The absence of honor…the absence of shame…the absence of integrity.

It’s mind-boggling!

Normally, you would assume that a group so connected to the general population would be a microcosm of the general population in character. It is not. Our politicians are heartlessly out of this world.

No, they don’t hire assassins anymore but what they do now is just as bad.

Betrayals a la carte!

I know that for the past year or so, we focused on Osinbajo’s betrayal of Tinubu. But there are many more politicians who should not be trusted past the distance they could be physically thrown.

1. How many politicians did Jonathan bring from obscurity to limelight and stardom but stabbed him in the back eventually?

2. How many politicians did Ajimobi make but stabbed him in the back when he was alive and even in death?

3. How many politicians ate at Saraki’s table but stabbed him in the back?

4. How many politicians benefitted from Ambode but stabbed him in the back?

5. How many politicians wined and dined with Makinde but stabbed him in the back?

6. How many politicians did Akeredolu empower but stabbed him in the back?

7. How many politicians did Ayodele Fayose make but stabbed him in the back?

8. Ladoja has betrayal stories to tell.

9. Fayemi has betrayal stories to tell.

10. Amosun has betrayal stories to tell.

Please add to the list if you want.

They betray, get betrayed, they betray again, and the vicious circle continues.

It’s so scary!

I said above that Nigerian politicians are not a microcosm of the population because normal human beings…normal Nigerians have a modicum of shame, of integrity, of honor. And they are mindful of posterity.

Not our politicians.

Gaddem! Our politicians have no scruples!

When you see them together…laughing and joking, holding hands and slapping each other’s back…don’t think the camaraderie being exuded is genuine. It’s not. What’s in their hearts is fatal poison.

My intent with this post is not to dissuade anyone from politics. Far from it. In fact, I encourage you to get in and help sanitize the thing. We need all people of conscience to serve as antidote for this fatal poison.

Ko je bo se je.

Doxology.
