Making History: Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao Akala Moved a Motion for First Responders on Nigerian Highways

…sets his best foot forward for all Nigerians

Tuesday, 25th of July, and it’s still the first year of the 10th Assembly.

Honorable Olamijuwonlo Alao Akala has obviously been waiting for his moment to present a momentous motion before the House. This is how you make a grand entrance, I think.

A motion on first responders for all major and minor highways in Nigeria, he named it.

In his motion to the House, he appealed for the provision of first responders (ambulances) at 15km and 35km points of every major and minor highways respectively. He took this further and went on to pray for a dedicated emergency line for accident victims, which, come to think about it, may also be used for vulnerable road users and Nigerians in an emergency.

This is often taken for granted, but the early stages of an incident are responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, and even the environment.

This life-saving motion, the popularity of which was signalled by the over eight of his colleagues that wished to second it, seeks to help save the lives of highway accident victims and to keep their dreams alive.

In his statement, “Everyone (our youths going to school, our mothers going to the farm/market) has a personal story on Nigeria highways, from Lagos/Ibadan, Oyo/Ilorin to Abuja/Kogi highways, yet, we have not done anything to reduce the risks our people and road users are exposed to daily.

If there are first responders at a safe distance to respond in good time, we can raise victims’ chances of survival. Beyond saving the lives of anyone who has been seriously injured, these professionals help to keep dreams alive.

It won’t stop accidents happening but percentage of survival is increased.”

This intercession is way overdue, especially as the state of the roads in Nigeria is still one not to forget to say a prayer when you are embarking on.

This is a monumental piece of legislation, and we hope it is backed up with swift execution.

A forward thinking and relatable lawmaker and sure hope to Nigerians, our eyes are peeled on this one.

Well done!
