The Chairman Senate Committee on Land Transport and Deputy Chairman Information And Communication Technology (ICT), Distinguished Senator Dr Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari, today Thursday 18th May, 2023, delivered the 2nd Annual Distinguished Lecture at the College of Management and Social Science, Fountain University,
Osogbo in Osun State.
Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, who won his re-election in the recent election for the third consecutive and unprecedented term to represent Oyo North Senatorial District in the 10th Assembly, was the Guest Lecturer at the Great Citadel of Learning with the theme, ” Digital Economy, Nigerian Youths And National Development”.
The ovation was at the loudest when the citation, a combination of outstanding political pedigree, high academic standard and technocratic exploits, of the Distinguished Senator was being read to the audience of eminent scholars and captains of industries. An indication that the school invited a big fish that they would benefit from his worth of experience and exploits ? Your guess is as good as mine.
The Harvard Certified Politician highlighted many importance of being digitally literate and how the Nigerian Youths can harness these opportunities for self reliance and national development.
” There are many opportunities in being computer literate so don’t use the internet negatively. Some youths are working for many companies online while still schooling. It will come to a stage that one will be considered illiterate if such person is not computer literate. So I implore you never to walk with your eyes closed “.
Senator Buhari in the course of the event offered satisfactory and analytical answers to the series of questions that were being asked by the students and other attendees while suggestions like complete review of our education system because of obsolete curriculum to meet the present digital age , using digital ways to eradicate corruption in Nigeria and putting into law unpardonable punitive measures to offenders, amongst others were being offered to the legislator so that he could sponsor bills in this regard.
In answering the question of Badmus Labake Kaosara, a 200 level Mass Communication student, relating to the present challenges being faced by many people in the society, on the solutions to the limitation and discouragement of digital literacy by financial incapabilities, Senator Buhari said, ” financial incapabilities are everywhere . I also started poorly because I was a pap seller. My mother sold pap in those days ” omo iya eleko”. But with prayers, determination and focus, to God be the glory, the Lord has been good.
While imploring all of you to be prudent with the little amount you are getting, I charge all of you to also walk with your eyes opened to many sane opportunities that you could make good use of so that you could be self reliant and be a positive contributor to national development.
Also the fully well equipped ICT Centre that I promised the school will ease the financial incapabilities discouraging digital learning. And I am hopeful that you will put the facilities into use when ready”.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of a gift by the VC, Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, Dr. Olusegun F. Liadi, Acting Dean, College Of Management And Social Science, Prof Johnson O Olaleru, Golden Professor Of Mathematics University of Lagos, the former VC of the institution and other dignitaries to Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari in appreciation for his coming and immense contribution to the development of the institution.
