A motion is a proposal moved by a law maker in accordance with well established rules that the Senate do something, order something done or express an opinion with regard to some matter.

Petition, on the other hand, is a formal written request sent in to parliament by members of the public calling for some form of action by the Legislature.

In Nigeria, petitions must be presented on behalf of the petitioner by a lawmaker.
